Your Website Address Is What Now?
Your website address is just as important as your company name…maybe even more.
Having an easy-to-understand website address is important to your company, especially if you want to gain business through word-of-mouth referrals. If you’re an established business, you probably spent quite some time trying to select exactly the right name for your company, considering what people would think when they hear it, how it compared to the competition, and perhaps even how it should look for your brand/logo. However, when it came time to select your website address, did you give it as much consideration?
With so many companies on the web, oftentimes the ideal website address isn’t available. If you named your company Fix It Up because you offer handyman services, when you go to register a website domain there’s a good chance that fixitup.com is taken (which it is). Your gut instinct might be to treat it like your e-mail address you established with AOL back in the day and slap some numbers on the end (that have meaning to you but seem random to others) or a dash between a few of the words (fix-itup.com), but beware! While it will be easy for you to remember (it’s your livelihood after all) and might look okay on your business card, think about the future potential.
If you’re good at what you do, you won’t always have to be there to hand your business card to someone – other people will want to rave about your business, and, when they do, they probably won’t have one of your cards in their pocket. So make sure your website address is something that is easy to remember and pass along without much explanation – being catchy doesn’t hurt either. That way when your pleased customer overhears someone talking about needing a sink fixed, she can say, “I have a great guy for that! You can check him out at fixitup.com,” rather than, “I have a great guy for that! His website was fix it up something…maybe fixitup123.com…no, maybe it was fix dash it up .com… I can’t remember, but he did a great job!” In fact, if you’re just starting a business, it might be best to determine your business name based on what easy-to-remember website address is available. You don’t want people frustrated trying to find your website because they can’t remember if it’s an E or an A that comes after the T in maintenance or asking repeatedly what the address is because they can’t understand what’s being said when someone tells them to visit fixitbiz.com because you decided to use a “cool” abbreviation for business. Your business name is important to you, and your website address should be too.
